Spoon Scorp Mini

The Spoon Scorp Mini, is a carving tool that despite prototyping many years ago I considered unnecessary for most of the spoons I carved. That said I often received requests for a smaller version so made a few for some friends to try out and the feedback confirmed that there is indeed a place in many folk's tool kits for one of these.

As with the other models it features a hand forged, looped blade, finely honed and set in an ergonomic, faceted hardwood handle. Each tool is supplied honed and ready to carve with a protective wooden box to cover the blade.

The blade is formed with an internal diameter of 16mm with a slightly more exposed tang to extend the tools reach into tighter spaces. This smaller model is handy for small scoops and hollow forms but is also well suited to quickly removing waste in larger spoons that can then be refined with a more open swept tool. It could also be used to apply texture to the surfaces of other projects such as shrink pots.

The hollow forged inner bevel means that keeping the tool sharp can be achieved relatively easily whilst maintaining the correct outer bevel angle. The polished convex outer bevel allows the blade to turn smoothly through a hollowing cut.

The blade has a finely honed cutting edge set up primarily for working in green wood, finishing cuts can be made after seasoning but roughing out in seasoned very hard wood is not advised.
